"Mr President, let me pick up from where my colleague Daniel Caspary left off, because the focus in recent times has been on bilateral trade agreements and not the Doha World Trade Agreement, which stalled so long ago that we have almost forgotten. We wish those who are negotiating well in their endeavours, although the Director-General of the WTO remains somewhat unconvinced that they can crack an agreement.
I am interested in why the Doha Agenda stalled in 2008. It was over agriculture issues, and the Commissioner has referred to this. It was a desire by the developing countries to protect their agriculture in a way that they saw fit. It is still an issue. I note that there is some progress, but I am not so sure that sufficient progress has been made and the issue of agriculture in trade agreements generally is a contentious one. We have a Canada deal and a US bilateral deal with the EU in the offing, and we need to look very carefully at their implications for the agricultural sector in the European Union."@en1
