"Mr President, we certainly need more women in our boardrooms. We certainly need more women in politics. There can be no doubt about that. The question is how we go about it. I do not believe, Ms Reding, that your proposals will help the situation. I think that, on the contrary, they will make it worse. Women business leaders tell me that, actually, they do not want to be put on boards by patronising laws. They want to be put there on merit. Now, speaking as someone who has been discriminated against, I think all forms of discrimination are wrong, as is positive discrimination, because positive discrimination is discrimination, and discrimination creates victims. It does not matter what gender you are: if you believe in equality and you create discrimination, you create a victim. Ms Reding, do not legislate to make victims. That is not what you are in your job to do."@en1
