"The vote to approve the guidelines for developing the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) represents a key moment in the move towards a genuine European transport infrastructure policy. Crucial amendments at committee stage ensured that regional variance was taken into account in the final TEN-T package, such as exemptions from costly rail infrastructure standards for isolated rail networks. Inappropriate infrastructure demands and binding deadlines in the original proposals would have forced my constituency of Northern Ireland to spend billions on its road and rail networks or else risk infraction proceedings. Thankfully common sense has prevailed. The TEN-T agreed represents a very positive outcome for Northern Ireland. We face unique challenges in terms of developing our transport networks. Detached from the rest of the United Kingdom and mainland Europe, the choice for local people travelling in the EU is invariably restricted. TEN-T offers the chance of increasing mobility and interconnectivity by linking major cities and ports to form an efficient ‘road-rail-air-waterʼ transport network. The economic benefits that derive from such a network in terms of job creation and inward investment mean that the TEN-T package is an excellent deal for both Northern Ireland and the EU."@en1
