"The Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) offers real potential in terms of developing the EUʼs transport, telecommunications and energy networks. In one of the most significant economic crises to hit the EU, no sector has been immune to cost pressures. Nevertheless, developing a genuine European transport infrastructure policy requires improvements to interoperability and infrastructure. While an additional EUR 8 billion of transport funding for the 2014-2020 period may seem out of step with austerity measures, the potential economic benefits of the TEN-T package are vast. In my constituency, the opportunities to avail of CEF funds for roads in areas with isolated networks and for funding projects on both core and comprehensive networks will offer a much needed boost to local transport infrastructure. The challenge for Northern Ireland will be to meet the 2030 and 2050 deadlines for these networks. The CEF is not of course restricted to transport. Improvements in telecommunications and energy networks can also benefit the local population, attracting new investments and expanding existing enterprises. While it is disappointing that the Londonderry to Belfast connection is not included as a core network, overall the CEF package is a very good result for Northern Ireland."@en1
