"Madam President, the more we connect Europe, the more we will connect the people of Europe, particularly in trying to reduce the democratic deficit that people speak of and the feeling that people do not see Europe as being relevant to their lives. If we can connect Europe, especially in relation to transport, energy and telecommunications, that will help to alleviate that problem somewhat.
In the telecommunications area, eliminating roaming and having high speed broadband right across Europe will obviously go a long way to connecting Europe in that regard. Energy is absolutely vital and will become more vital into the future, and Europe certainly has to wean itself off dependency on importing fuels, especially fossil fuels, from third countries.
We have to utilise the resources within Europe. Mr Turmes referred last night to renewable resources, especially the potential of offshore wind off the west coast of Ireland and Scotland, where you have the most reliable wind in Europe. These aspects have to be taken into account."@en1
