"Europe’s cultural and creative sectors (CCS) should be recognised for their intrinsic cultural value but also for the major contribution they make to growth and jobs, particularly in large urban areas. A 2010 Dublin City Council report found that Dublin’s CCS were responsible for 77 000 jobs in the greater Dublin area, making up 10% of total employment and generating total gross added value of EUR 3.2 billion for the Dublin city-region. Spending on culture is not a luxury, but a smart investment and it is at times of economic crisis that we most need culture. I therefore very much welcome the new Creative Europe programme. This will see spending of almost EUR 1.5 billion – 9% more than the current programme – supporting European culture, music, literature, the performing arts, heritage and related sectors, over the next seven years. Funding will also be available under Erasmus+, COSME and Horizon 2020 as well as the Structural Funds. I would like to see my own city of Dublin now use Creative Europe and these other programmes to emulate cities like Barcelona and Amsterdam and tap in to the potential of its CCS as a way of promoting wider socio-economic development."@en1
