"Madam President, the Erasmus for All programme is an excellent example of how we can support our citizens in competing in an increasingly global labour market. It also contributes to our reaching the Europe 2020 targets on education and employment.
In my constituency, the West Midlands, between 2007 and 2012 nearly 5 000 university students participated in the scheme. I therefore welcome the Commission’s initiative to bring together existing programmes under the heading of Erasmus for All. I hope this will create a simpler, more streamlined system, from which more people will be able to benefit.
I also welcome the emphasis on lifelong learning and vocational training, from which institutions such as Walsall College and Black Country University Technical College could benefit. The insistence on better coordination between education, business and civil society is also welcome. As a Liberal Democrat in the UK, I have always pushed for more apprenticeships, and I would like to see this programme used to fund cross-border apprenticeships."@en1
