"Mr President, European environmental law is designed to deliver a high level of protection for the environment. In my constituency this law is being openly flouted, with breaches of the Birds and Habitats Directives going unpunished. Complaints have been submitted to the Commission by Ban the Burn, a local environmental group, and by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, both concerning the illegal burning and destruction of protected habitats, including blanket bog on the Walshaw Moor Estate in the South Pennines Natura 2000 site. It should be noted that blanket bog plays a role in flood minimisation, and Walshaw Moor is situated above Hebden Bridge, a town which is susceptible to flooding. It is not acceptable that governments on the one hand complain that the EU does not benefit their citizens, while denying them the protection and the real benefits of EU environmental law. I understand that the Commission recently received wholly inadequate responses from the UK Government which failed to explain these destructive activities. I call on the Commission to take swift action."@en1
