"Mr President, I voted against the report on the Common Foreign and Security Policy, as it calls for greater cooperation within the EU, and between the EU and NATO. Unfortunately, this directs the EU towards even greater militarisation, which merely tackles the symptoms, rather than the causes, of global inequalities. Today half of the world’s population live in poverty, with one person in eight suffering from malnutrition. Poverty kills approximately 19 people globally every minute of every day. Nineteen people will have died from poverty during the time it will take me to speak here. That is absolutely shocking. In 2011, USD 1 738 billion was spent globally on military expenditure. This is a disgraceful misuse of public funds. Through positive neutrality, Sinn Féin supports greater funding for programmes for human rights which would lift people out of poverty. After all, poverty is one of the greatest causes of instability, conflict and human suffering."@en1
