"Mr President, earlier this month up to 300 people drowned off the coast of Lampedusa, off Sicily, and I welcome the motion for raising the subject in the House. This tragic event brings the number of refugees who have lost their lives whilst crossing the Mediterranean Sea from North Africa during the past decade to over 6 000. It is clear that action needs to be taken to prevent any further loss of life, but it is important that we do so by tackling not just the consequences of illegal migration but also the causes. The personal stories of migrants attempting to reach Europe are not to be envied. People are fleeing the single-party-state politics of Eritrea, the destruction and destitution of North Africa in the wake of the Arab Spring, the horrors of Al-Shabaab in Somalia, and worse. Whilst the EU has a number of measures at its disposal to tackle the situation – and of course this is primarily a competence of the Member States – we must be reminded of the very real need to improve lives by giving aid and trade concessions and making the chance for people to remain in their own home countries much more of a reality. It is only by doing this that we will remove the incentive for people to embark on these perilous crossings in the first place."@en1
