"I supported the adoption of the final European Parliament report on organised crime, corruption and money laundering: recommendations on action and initiatives to be taken. With regard to the call for the harmonisation of business taxes and uniform tax rules in all Member States, I would recall and stress that under the EU treaties, taxation is a matter for national competence where the principle of unanimity applies. Discussion on this issue has to have regard to the needs of geographically peripheral Member States whose prosperity and employment levels depend, to a large extent, on their capacity to attract inward investment. Tax fraud and evasion is a global problem that needs to be countered by stronger European and international action, including on tax transparency and the automatic exchange of information in tax matters. I very much welcome the call for the exclusion of economic operators for at least five years from public contracts throughout the EU if convicted for participation in a criminal organisation, money laundering or terrorist financing, exploitation of human beings or child labour, corruption or any other serious offences that produce social harm such as tax evasion or tax-related offences."@en1
