"This report on the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) will determine the future funding for the common fisheries policy (CFP) and the integrated maritime policy (IMP). Earlier this year Labour MEPs supported historic reforms of the EU’s common fisheries policy that will ensure we preserve fish stocks for future generations so today we voted for an EMFF that will support, and not hamper, those reforms. The largest part of the EMFF’s EUR 6.5 billion budget will go towards supporting the CFP, with the allocation of funding to Member States reflecting the importance of each state’s fishing industry. Fishing must be sustainable, so Labour MEPs voted against subsidies for fleet renewal, which would lead to over-capacity and over-fishing. In order to support the aims of the reformed CFP, we voted to support measures that would promote sustainable fishing, such as training for fishermen, better enforcement of rules and financial aid to improve management, monitoring and control of fish stocks."@en1
