"Trade – whether international or within the EU – should adhere to standardised rules, many of which emanate from this place. One of the more positive aspects of the European Union is the importance of the single market for free trade between Member States. Unfortunately for the UK, and in particular for milk producers in Northern Ireland, we have a situation pertaining whereby the Republic of Ireland is complicit in a campaign which restricts milk entering their market, a purely protectionist measure. Through the use of the National Dairy Council logo, which guarantees milk is produced in the Irish Republic for the Irish domestic retail market, milk processors and farmers from Northern Ireland are being excluded. At the very least this is against the spirit of the single market if not illegal, therefore I would urge the Commission to investigate this practice as a matter of urgency. Furthermore, I would call on the ROI Government and those who support the NDC campaign to recognise that, if Harvest 2020 targets are to be achieved, this protectionist policy against the UK must stop. Forget at your peril that an agri-food sector which is highly dependable on exports cannot afford to be protectionist."@en1
