"Mr President, in the context of what is a more restrained budget – albeit a budget that is still vast and still offers opportunities to reduce wasteful spending – it is welcome to see the priority given in sections of the budget to measures that can be of real benefit to our constituents in this time of economic difficulty. At a time when unemployment – particularly among our youth – is a massive challenge, the task of government, whether at Member State level or here in the EU institutions, ought to be to direct resources towards job creation, growth, innovation and driving our economy, through further research and development.
I also welcome moves to increase transparency in how money is spent, including our own budgets as MEPs, and I was supportive of those amendments. When we are entrusted with public money, we have a responsibility to spend it wisely and appropriately."@en1
