"I commend my colleague, Mr Rossi, for drafting this report on what is a very serious issue. Having been an NHS consultant prior to entering this Chamber, I have always continued to follow developments in healthcare. The spread of HAIs in UK hospitals has been a particular problem over the past decade and there has been much press coverage of the issue, particularly with regard to MRSA and C. Difficile. The UK has taken a centralised approach to dealing with this problem, setting targets in 2004 for the reduction of HAIs, and ring-fencing specific budgets. I am pleased to say that these efforts have proved effective, with HAI-related deaths falling dramatically. Indeed, in the case of MRSA, the death rate has fallen by 75 % between 2008 and 2012. There is still work to be done, however, and we must not be complacent – the overall message of this report in fact. Its recommendations for encouraging the implementation of national checklists and for following the WHOʼs guidelines for better hygiene are to be welcomed, but we must remember when assessing such matters that public health is a shared competency with Member States."@en1
