"One of the major concerns in regard to patient safety is the prevention of incidences of health associated infection and in this context I welcome some of the steps already taken by Member States to help ensure cross-border patient safety. The Commission has also been involved in a number of initiatives under the Research Programme, the OECD-led project on healthcare quality indicators and the adoption of the Cross-border Healthcare Directive. The work done by the European Centre for Disease Control has also been useful but there is still a need to set up a reporting system at EU level to help combat health associated infections. One of the most important issues dealt with in this report is the need to find an alternative to treatment with antibiotics and to find responses to antibiotic resistance including bacteriophage therapy."@en1
