"30-40 % of adverse events related to medical treatment, in both the hospital sector and community care are preventable. These include healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), which are contracted by an estimated 5 % of patients in hospitals – or 3.2 million people – each year and are directly responsible for 37 000 deaths. The report is focused on healthcare-associated infections, with a particular focus on infections in home-care. The report also refers to patient empowerment, cross-border cooperation, promotion of new research, and better monitoring and harmonization of patient safety reporting by the Member States. Unfortunately, in Wales we are familiar with cases of serious infections arising in hospitals; therefore, steps to prevent this in future are to be welcomed. That is why I voted in favour of this report."@en1
