"I abstained on this report as I felt that, although it has some good points, it unfortunately opens the way for university-business partnerships, something which will be to the detriment of the impartiality of the education system and create a bias in curriculums towards certain career paths. It also does not go far enough towards ensuring that young people have access to good-quality and paid internships, and does not ensure internships are not a veil for unpaid work. I voted in favour of paragraph 74, as I believe that Massive Open Online Courses are an important learning tool and offer flexibility and facilitate affordable and lifelong learning. However, I would like to use this explanation to underline the fact that I do not think they should be seen as a substitute or an alternative to universities, which for some are becoming unaffordable due to high course fees. University education should be available for all who choose that path, regardless of their circumstances, as should MOOCs. But one should not become the ‘poor man’s’ version of the other."@en1
