"By and large I am proud of my Sahel report, which offers concrete recommendations for EU policymakers. Nevertheless, I wish to record my disagreement with certain amendments, in particular those mentioning sexual reproductive rights, and explicitly in one case, abortion. For me this was a conscience issue, but I was outvoted by colleagues. I was also disappointed that the House did not follow me in rejecting amendments linking corruption in Mali with ‘cultural and ethnic separationʼ, and in particular, placing sororate and levirate marriage in the same category as child marriage and infibulation. Sororate and levirate marriage are perfectly legitimate if performed with consent; if we want to be taken seriously as partners and engage in real dialogue, we must not lecture people and tell them how to live their lives. I further regret a line calling on Algeria to ‘act upon its responsibility to alleviate the human rights situation in the Tindouf campsʼ, wording as provocative as it is vague; but I am pleased that all references to ‘occupied territoriesʼ, which is not UN terminology, were removed. Overall I hope that my report can offer a real contribution to the regionʼs political and human rights discourse."@en1
