"I welcome the referral of this report back to Committee as a triumph of common sense. This report (as voted by the Committee on Womenʼs Rights and Gender Equality (FEMM)) concerned policy on sexual and reproductive health and rights in Member States and the EU. It touches on access to contraception, safe abortion services, comprehensive sex education, STI prevention and treatment, etc. All these are matters of subsidiarity, i.e. are for the Member States to decide themselves. Indeed the report that went through the FEMM Committee actually listed Ireland, Poland and Malta as the only three states where abortion was not available. Our EU motto is ‘unity in diversityʼ not unity in homogeneity! The EU has no competency to discuss these matters and therefore should not do so and I see todayʼs vote as recognition of same."@en1
