"The environmental and human cost of current ship recycling is inexcusable, which is why I supported the introduction of much higher standards for recycling EU ships. Current ship recycling practices often result in the release of toxic chemicals and heavy metals, such as asbestos, lead, cadmium and mercury, while recyclers routinely work in poor conditions that violate their human rights to health and safety at work. This report will oblige Member States to use only ship recycling facilities that meet internationally required standards set by the Hong Kong Convention. A list of EU-approved sites that comply with environmental and worker-safety standards will be created, and it is hoped that this will push sites that fall below these standards to improve. The report also requires all EU ships, as well as non-EU ships using EU ports, to carry an inventory of hazardous materials. In an earlier vote, Labour MEPs supported the creation of a ship recycling fund, but this was defeated. However, the final report does task the European Commission with reporting on a possible system to incentivise the use of safe, EU-approved ship recycling facilities."@en1
