"Madam President, while I welcome this regulation, which was the result of the French breast implant scandal, I would warn against knee-jerk legislation. I welcome the decision today to refer the report back to committee. When adopted, this regulation will replace the existing directive, and we hope it will address inconsistencies in Member States’ interpretation of current rules, thus increasing the protection of public health and safety and removing obstacles to the internal and external market. Medical devices are a very large employer in my country, employing 25 000 people in total. My constituency, particularly Galway, is very dependent on this industry. Therefore it was important that this report not place unnecessary barriers on manufacturers. This is a highly sensitive and technical area. I welcome the opportunity to dedicate further time to this report in order to ensure that we get the balance right. Essentially we need to guarantee the highest level of consumer protection but also avoid placing unnecessary burdens on manufacturers."@en1
