"Mr President, firstly I welcome today’s condemnations from all sides of the House of the persecution of Christians. This is a topic that resonates with Christians in particular and especially with my party, the Christian Democrat Party, particularly on a day on which our President, Mr Martens, died. He was rightly described by Mr Schulz as being a devout Catholic all his life.
The future of Christians in many of these countries is at stake here. If things continue the way they are, they will be wiped out. Not only are Christians being persecuted and murdered, but churches are being destroyed and statues, particularly of Our Lady, are being broken up. We are the biggest single donor of development aid to many of these countries. We will have to get far tougher to ensure that the authorities in these countries protect Christians. We are Europe; we have a Christian heritage and I think it is only right and fair that we should stand up for our Christians because, if we do not do it, I cannot see anyone else doing it."@en1
