"The nature of the cases brought before Parliament’s Committee on Petitions denotes ongoing concern about the application of EU law in the fields of fundamental rights, the environment and the internal market. Discrimination, disability rights, the rights of children, our citizens’ freedom of information and the portability of social security entitlements are critical areas in which Member States must bring national provisions into line with the Treaties. The Commission must take vigorous action to compel Member States to comply with, transpose and correctly implement the applicable EU law. The Commission must remain alert to ensure effective freedom of movement for EU citizens’ families, which, in the cases of registered partnerships, same-sex couples or household members other than spouses, often face obstacles. I share the committee’s view that the technical and bureaucratic hurdles faced by citizens and the varying procedures employed by national administrations to deal with European Citizens’ Initiatives warrant the bringing forward of a review of the relevant EU regulation."@en1
