"I am a very active member of the Committee on Petitions and I always look forward to the annual report on the committee’s activities. In 2012, the committee afforded 1 985 citizens the opportunity to dialogue directly with the European Parliament. The right to petition Parliament is a long-standing right, conferred by Article 277 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union and by Article 44 of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. Environmental issues, the rights of persons with disabilities, children’s rights, the right of free movement and the right of access to documents and information were the main subjects of petitions submitted. The greatest task that the Committee on Petitions faces is to raise its profile among EU citizens."@en1
