"Caste-based discrimination is a widespread and persistent problem that affects around 260 million people worldwide, including in the UK. Victims face marginalisation, exclusion, limited access to basic services, slavery, sexual abuse and exploitation.
I supported this resolution, co-authored by my Labour colleague Michael Cashman, which calls for all forms of racism and discrimination, including caste discrimination, to be addressed with the same emphasis and determination throughout Europe, and for caste to be recognised by the EU as a distinct area of discrimination. I would like to see appropriate support given to development and human-rights projects that work against caste discrimination. In addition, the Commission should ensure the issue is raised regularly in dealings with our international partners, and especially with the governments of those states where caste discrimination is a particular problem. Many of the agriculture, mining and garments industries that supply multinational and European companies use bonded labour by so-called ‘lower caste’ people, so Labour MEPs are also calling for a caste-based discrimination clause to be included in all the EU’s trade and association agreements."@en1
