"Mr President, the phrase ‘all men are created equal’ is often taken as a fact, but actually, if you think about that phrase, it is discriminatory in itself because it excludes women. The other thing that we have to remember is that people are not created in equal circumstances and, when they are born to different social classes, or different levels of income, or different levels of intelligence, what we have to make sure is that people are not discriminated against.
For this reason I am sure that politicians here across the Parliament can accept that we should be fighting all forms of discrimination, including caste discrimination. But as my colleague from London Charles Tannock has said, it is important that we take account of deeply entrenched cultural issues and we make sure that we tread very carefully as we tackle some of these issues. The Indian Government has done much to tackle this area and I think it would be a mistake to include a caste-based discrimination clause in any trade agreements. Let us trade, sign agreements and slowly encourage the removal of caste discrimination."@en1
