"I have long been a supporter of Jordan, a key Middle Eastern country with a progressive and moderate leadership. Under King Abdullah, it has shown a real desire to improve the situation with regard to human rights and quality of life for its citizens, and to build a solid democracy. In its dealings with neighbours, Jordan has also demonstrated that it can play a big role in developing peace in the region. There is much we can do to support Jordan within the framework of the Euro-Mediterranean Agreement and the wider European Neighbourhood Policy; I welcome the recommendations, in particular, to enhance trade and economic links, and to support the partnership and reform SPRING programme. Of course, echoing this week’s discussion of Syrian refugees, Jordan must also be helped in every way possible to cope with a massive, and potentially highly destabilising, influx of refugees fleeing that brutal civil war. Jordan’s immense political and economic progress must not be jeopardised by the volatility of the region, and we should all back attempts to consolidate our dialogue and partnership with it as well as the material support we provide."@en1
