"Madam President, the deaths of over 200 refugees off the coast of Lampedusa are the tragic and bitter fruits of fortress Europe. They are shamefully only the most recent deaths and victims of an EU war against migrants. Only 4 days earlier, 13 migrants were drowned by being forced overboard by human traffickers close to the Sicilian coast. Almost 20 000 such deaths have been recorded in the past two decades. Each time we have another of these tragedies European leaders travel to the site, offer condolences and promise a political response. But the Commission’s solution here is the new border surveillance system, Eurosur. It claims that the system will help authorities to rescue migrants. It will not: it is about the further militarisation of European borders; it has a heavy participation of weapons manufacturers like Britain’s BAE; it goes along with OPARUS (Open Architecture for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle-based Surveillance), involving many of the same companies, even examining the question of drones to detect refugees entering Europe. We need to break and end racist immigration policies in Europe. An alternative is needed to the misery of capitalism and war, which forces millions to leave their homes and risk their lives in the search for a better life."@en1
