"The Syrian conflict has witnessed catastrophic loss of human life since the fighting between Bashar al-Assadʼs government forces and the Syrian rebel factions began. An almost daily feed of news reports have reminded people worldwide of the horrors of the Syrian conflict. It is estimated that over 100 000 people have been killed during the conflict, while around 2.1 million are refugees in neighbouring countries. The UN predicts that 3.5 million will have left Syria by the end of 2013. I therefore welcome Parliamentʼs support for convening a humanitarian conference to help Syriaʼs neighbouring countries cope with the escalating influx of refugees, as well as the call for EU countries under pressure to draw on the Asylum and Migration Fund and the Preparatory Action on Emergency Resettlement. The conference has the potential to strengthen the EUʼs role and involvement in diplomatic efforts to end the conflict, which have hitherto been low-key. I further welcome Commissioner Barnierʼs commitment to organise such a conference. Given current and predicted refugee numbers, I would call on the Commission to consider all options available, such as the possibility of applying the Temporary Protection Directive, should the deeply troubling circumstances of the Syrian refugees require such action."@en1
