"This Resolution called for a rejection of the European Commission’s proposals to set EU-wide rules on minimum rest periods and maximum duty times for pilots. Along with my Labour colleagues, I voted against the Resolution and in favour of the Commission proposals, which will ensure that all pilots operating in the EU adhere to the same strict standards on flight times that are already in force in the UK. I know that many people are concerned that these new rules will lower safety standards, but they have now been endorsed by Europe’s largest transport union, and I am confident that they will actually improve safety across the board by increasing rest requirements and reducing night-time flights. In addition, these rules will only set minimum standards, with Member States free to impose stricter rules if they wish. This means that there will be no lowering of standards in the UK at all, and in some cases the rules will actually be stricter; for example, flights of over 13 hours will now require a minimum of 4 pilots to be on board, rather than the current 3, while the maximum night-time flight limit will be reduced from 11h15m to 11 hours."@en1
