"Mr President, today I was exceptionally pleased that Parliament threw out the objections by the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety to the Commission’s new proposals on food products of animal origin.
The objection raised by the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety seemed to be based on misinformation and claims that this was going to water down the standards in slaughterhouses when, in actual fact, the reality is that the Commission’s proposals will strengthen the rules on hygiene in slaughterhouses and animal processing factories.
Therefore, I am very pleased that Parliament decided today to overrule the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety and to back the Commission’s plans for a much safer meat hygiene system across the rest of Europe."@en1
