"The claim that carbohydrates contribute to the maintenance of normal brain function is already legally permitted, although I personally feel extremely uncomfortable with it. The European Commission has, however, proposed restricting the use of this claim to foods containing complex carbohydrates, those low in sugar, or those containing natural sugars, such as fruit; foods such as cakes, biscuits and fizzy drinks, which contain added sugar, would not be able to use the claim. The Resolution that MEPs voted on today objected to this restriction and, if supported, would allow all products containing carbohydrates, including those that are high in sugar, to claim that they are ‘good for the brain’. I therefore voted against the Resolution, which would only favour food manufacturers and would go against the interests of consumers and health."@en1
