"Mr President, in my opinion this was a very odd vote today. EFSA are the scientists, they approved a health claim on carbohydrates, namely that they contribute to the maintenance of normal health function, as indeed they do. But we do not like the message, because of the fact that sugar is a carbohydrate. So we decide that, although the science is right, the message is wrong and we say no. Yet, on many other occasions, we say that we have to base our decisions on a scientific basis. So I find it quite contradictory. For example, at one point EFSA would not stand over the claim that prunes keep you regular. Mind you, they subsequently changed their mind. At the moment they have rejected all claims on probiotics, yet hundreds of peer-reviewed reports clearly show that probiotics do aid gut health. In Ireland we are in a position that we are not even able to use the words probiotic or prebiotic to advertise products. Indeed, somebody working in a health food shop will not be able to recommend probiotics. The whole thing is a crazy situation. It is contradictory and we need to sort out the mess. Today’s vote was just another example of it."@en1
