"The Professional Qualifications Directive sets rules for ensuring that qualifications required for entry into certain professions are recognised throughout the EU in order to facilitate freedom of movement for citizens. At the moment, professional mobility remains low due to a lack of simple and clear rules on mutual recognition of qualifications. I voted in favour of this update to the law, which will simplify the procedure while maintaining the high standards required to ensure quality and safety. In particular, the law will continue to allow employers to apply language controls on the recognition of qualifications so that anyone seeking professional work in the UK, such as a doctor or nurse, must first demonstrate a very strong grasp of English. The updated law also includes added measures to protect patients by introducing a Europe-wide alert system – this means that a doctor who has been struck off elsewhere in Europe will not be able to practise in the UK."@en1
