"Mr President, if you are unwell, injured or ill, you need to get access to a good doctor. But you also have to be able to communicate with them, and language skills are really important.
The vote that we took today makes it utterly clear that, going forward, doctors’ English language skills will be tested before they are given a licence to practise in the UK. And the new alert system means that, if a doctor is struck off in one country, they will not just be able to move to another country and carry on practising with other patients.
Lives have been lost in the past because this was not clear. These changes have taken too long. We as legislators need to make it clear that, when there are problems with EU rules, we need to act faster for our patients and for the people that we represent."@en1
