"There are some 6 million motor boats, sailing boats and personal watercraft used for sports and leisure throughout the EU. It is estimated that the marine leisure sector comprises more than 37 000 businesses, primarily SMEs, with around 272 000 direct employees in equipment manufacturing companies, sailing schools etc. I know of many such businesses in my own constituency, where marine leisure activities have become increasingly prevalent in places like Dundrum Bay and Strangford Lough.
The report which Parliament has adopted encourages harmonisation in the single market through the introduction of an updated system for defining boat design categories and regulating exhaust emissions. This is good for local businesses, as boat builders and equipment manufacturers will be less hampered in selling their wares by Member States’ differing specifications. The report is also welcome for the positive environmental impact it will have. It successfully supplements previous Commission proposals on reducing exhaust emissions and increasing the environmental performance of engines.
I therefore welcome the almost unanimous vote in favour of my colleague Malcolm Harbour’s report on recreational craft and watercraft, and I congratulate him and the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection on improving the Commission proposal."@en1
