"Environmental impact assessments (EIAs) are required for all projects that are likely to have a significant impact on the environment; these include projects such as building a road or railway, or mining. This update to the legislation was necessary to correct some shortcomings and to take account of new issues such as climate change and the use of natural resources. The strengthened EIA Directive will benefit the environment, human health and the economy and ensure that the public have much more access to information throughout the process. As well as ensuring that EIAs are carried out whenever necessary, the updated legislation will also require authorities to coordinate EIAs with other assessments required by EU law, such as those on industrial emissions, water quality and natural habitats. One of the big issues in this vote was whether an EIA should be required for all shale gas exploration and extraction, regardless of the size of the project. I voted in favour of this, although I was disappointed that MEPs voted to require EIAs only for the phase where the fracking technique is actually being used. Labour MEPs also voted in favour of extending EIAs to cover all airport construction."@en1
