"Mr President, I voted in favour of environmental impact assessments being extended to the exploration and extraction of shale gas. After all, over 100 governments across Europe, such as France, and countries around the world like South Africa, Canada and Australia have a ban or moratorium on fracking.
There are well-grounded concerns that we are destroying the earth from under our feet. The green fields of Ireland could go from 40 shades of green to 50 shades of grey. Fracking is at a depth below groundwater, and the drilling operation crosses drinking water. There are concerns about the potential damage to crop land, which could be affected by contaminated groundwater.
We should always apply the precautionary principle, especially when we know that there were seismic tremors caused by shale gas exploration in the north-west of England."@en1
