"Madam President, three things were said by the Syrian refugees our Group is hosting in Strasbourg last night. I quote: ‘We don’t believe in the international community any more, we are dying in camps because we have no food, milk or medicine. If you kept the humanitarian corridor open I would be one of the first people to go back to Syria. Who would have thought we would seek safe haven in a country like Yemen?’
The Conservative spokesperson this morning, who I do respect, said of the Syrian refugee crisis that Europe must show solidarity and recognise our moral imperative, repeating the exact words of the British Prime Minister at the G20 meeting. Yet Britain is not amongst the 12 EU countries which have offered resettlement to Syrian refugees, and about the recent protests by Syrian refugees trying to enter Britain via France, the UK border agencies said (again I quote): ‘Illegal migration in France is the responsibility of the French authorities’.
I say in this debate that I do not know what definition of solidarity there is which says that 60 % of resettlement in Europe is borne by two countries, not including my own. I do not know what definition of morality exists which says that Syrian refugees are living in desperation in their own region but become illegal migrants within our own."@en1
