I think the learned and wise and experienced Mr Tannock said it all when he spoke about the progress that Taiwan has made. He referred to its financial dynamism and the economic miracle of Taiwan, and he said improving trade relations with it makes perfect sense. It certainly does. Also, it is perfect timing that we should discuss Taiwan almost simultaneously with discussing our relationship with China. They are not mutually exclusive and it is only right that we should try and improve relations with both, particularly when it comes to trade. Also, we have to be very mindful of the fact that Taiwan espouses democratic principles, as we do, so we have an obligation to try and help it in that regard as well. I welcome the discussion this evening."@en1
