"Madam President, I think my noble friend, Mr Kazak, has touched upon something that will no doubt be a fear in the minds of some of the leaders in some of our Member States. But it is for the Union to be bold in these matters. China has no official objection to trade with Taiwan, and therefore it can have no realistic or defensible objection to such an agreement with Taiwan. It is in our interests to promote our values, and that means trading with all countries and recognising that we share far more in common with countries that are democracies than with those which are not."@en1
