"Mr President, I too welcome the proposed bilateral investment agreement between China and the EU. I think it is far preferable to have one at EU level than Member States going it alone. There are many reasons for that, but certainly in terms of investment and development and the way the modern world is going, the more arrangements and the closer cooperation we can have with a growing economy like China, the better it is for us and also for them. It should not be viewed as something that has to be done on a 50-50 basis. Let us both maximise the opportunities and have an open approach to it. The Chinese people are lovely, friendly people, as I discovered when I had the privilege of attending the Beijing Games. Over a year ago, the now Prime Minister of China came to my constituency and visited a farm there. The farmer had a calf born that day and afterwards he called to say that the calf and the Prime Minister of China were both doing very well."@en1
