"I believe that this is an important report and I am glad that Parliament addressed the issue of ‘gendercideʼ which we have described as ‘the killing of people belonging to a particular sex, because of their sexʼ. This applies particularly to cases of female foetuses being aborted and new-born baby girls being killed because they are female. Gendercide is a sad reality in many cultures. However, I chose to abstain on the final vote because of my pro-life principles. I am concerned that ‘sexual and reproductive health care servicesʼ and ‘reproductive rightsʼ are often used as euphemisms for abortion. I agree with the EPP Group which sought to promote a stronger pro-life message at committee level by having the text refer to ‘unborn girlsʼ. Unfortunately, the Committee on Womenʼs Rights and Gender Equality opposed this position."@en1
