"Smoking kills over 700 000 people a year in the EU and is the leading cause of preventable deaths. In addition, the majority of smokers start before the age of 18 and we are increasingly seeing tobacco companies directly targeting women and young people with attractive packaging and flavours to make cigarettes more palatable. I believe 75 % health warnings on cigarette packets should be the minimum and I supported an amendment calling for full standardised packaging, so I was disappointed that MEPs voted in favour of 65 % health warnings. I was also disappointed that, with support from the Tories, MEPs voted against a ban on slim cigarettes and to delay a ban on menthols for eight years. However, I am pleased that other measures, such as a ban on flavoured cigarettes, were adopted. On e-cigarettes, I recognise their potential to help people quit smoking. However, we must ensure that they are safe and do not become a gateway to smoking for young people, which is why I voted in favour of regulating e-cigarettes as medicines, in the same way that we regulate other nicotine replacement therapies."@en1
