"Mr President, this directive is the very minimum that is required to prevent and deter a new generation of smokers. The Irish Government just this week produced an ambitious and comprehensive plan to make Ireland tobacco-free by 2025. The directive will be an important tool in that campaign.
One in two smokers die from smoking-related disease. Smokers die on average 14 years earlier than non-smokers. In Ireland, 5 200 people die each year from smoking-related diseases such as cancer, stroke and respiratory disease: these are all avoidable deaths. The human cost to smokers and their families in terms of sickness, suffering and death is tragic and incalculable. The financial cost to our already stretched health services is absolutely enormous.
I voted for the pictorial health warning covering 75% of the pack, and for banning slim cigarettes targeted at young girls as well as flavoured products, including menthol, vanilla and strawberry. I find the attempts by the PPE Group and others to dilute this directive regrettable and I wish the rapporteur well in her negotiations with Council."@en1
