"Mr President, one thing we all agree on is that it is obvious there should be less corruption. We all want to tackle corruption and we all want to tackle the human rights issues. However, we have to be a bit careful if we are lecturing other countries on these issues. Let us look closer to home. We know that the accounts of the European Union have not been signed off for 18 years. We know that there is corruption when it comes to the spending of EU money. So let us be careful before we lecture other countries.
I remember once giving a lecture to some MBA students about corruption – we were talking about certain practices in Nigeria, something called ‘dash’, i.e. payments that grease the wheels in Nigeria – and I was asking ‘Is this an example of corruption?’ My Nigerian students turned to me and said, ‘How dare you call that corruption, when you have something called corporate hospitality? We see that as corruption.’ So we have to be very careful about the perception of ‘us’ before we lecture others on issues such as corruption and confidence in companies doing business."@en1
