"We need to enforce, regulate and legislate for tobacco activities and products. Research shows that tobacco places a heavy burden on governments and society as a whole. Costs include indirect costs related to workday losses due to morbidity and direct costs associated with inpatient and outpatient care. Non-smokers also pay for the costs of smoking, primarily in the form of higher health insurances and medical costs related to second-hand smoke, leading to higher taxes and higher prices for healthcare products and services. The new Directive will be good for people’s health and will especially act to discourage young people from getting hooked on tobacco products. One in every five young boys and girls between the ages of 13 and 15 in Europe are smokers. This is an absolutely shocking ticking time bomb for our public health systems. We have a chance to protect our children from the harms of tobacco and assist those who smoke to stop. For those reasons, I support and applaud the rapporteurʼs work."@en1
