"Madam President, I am afraid that the Commission and the rapporteur are wrong to call for e-cigarettes to be treated as medicinal products. I just think they are missing the big picture, which is that these are a potential game changer in the fight against tobacco-related disease. They can save millions of lives. I have had hundreds of letters from constituents, former smokers, who have said ‘We have tried everything else, we have tried nicotine patches and the like. They have not worked. These things have made a huge difference to my life’.
Of course, e-cigarettes have got to be properly regulated. Advertising should be controlled. Our amendment introduces these controls.
It would be quite wrong to take measures that might in some way restrict the availability of e-cigarettes, or increase their price. Let us just remember that 700 000 people die of tobacco-related disease in Europe each year. The goal is to reduce that number, by millions. We should not make it any harder to buy e-cigarettes than it is to buy conventional tobacco cigarettes."@en1
