"Mr President, in 2006 this Parliament set up a committee of inquiry into Equitable Life. I chaired that committee and in 2007 we reported back. It is good news for Parliament that money is being paid by the UK Government to policyholders who were affected by the demise of that company, and there are large numbers of them – over a million in the UK and 15 000 in other EU Member States. The bad part of this issue is that there is some sluggishness in how the compensation scheme is working. I would urge colleagues from the United Kingdom to put pressure again on their administration to make sure that those affected get the compensation they are entitled to. We have concerns that 20% of policyholders may not receive compensation because the administrators say they cannot contact them. So this is a wake-up call to policyholders. I think it is really important, because the scheme ends in March of next year, that we put out this warning both to our UK colleagues and to the administration. They must do better."@en1
